Midlands PR split prior to its sale to National Power

Midlands Electricity’s PR department has been split in two in the

run-up to the sale of the company’s energy supply business to National

Power later this month.

Nine of the 12-strong Midlands Electricity PR team this week transferred

to National Power, while Midlands’ former corporate relations director

Mike Dernie left last month to start up his own consultancy, Dernie

Associates.

The remaining four staff will stay at Midlands, whose business is now

solely electricity distribution, involving managing the pylon

network.

They will be led by former media relations officer Caroline Whittle, who

becomes PR manager.

The nine staff transferring to National Power will set up a PR

department for National Power’s new retail division, handling all

internal and external communications. The department will work

independently of the existing National Power PR department which handles

corporate matters. It will be headed by former Midlands Electricity

corporate relations manager Dave Thompson who becomes PR manager.

Thompson said: ’We had to work out on the basis of the skills of the

staff which would transfer to National Power. We will handle PR for the

two million energy supply customers that National Power has bought.’

National Power is buying Midlands Electricity’s energy supply business

for pounds 180 million in a deal announced last year, which is expected

to be completed by the end of this month.
