THE HAGUE: US internet retailer Buy.Com has appointed Shandwick

Netherlands to promote its pan-European launch, scheduled for

mid-1999.

The brief covers the UK, France, the Netherlands and Germany.

Shandwick’s Dutch operation, based in The Hague, won the account, which

commands a six-figure budget, late last month, after a three-way pitch

against Burson-Marsteller and Hill and Knowlton.

Shandwick Netherlands managing director Joan Clements will start

co-ordinating the launch in May.

Buy.Com, a US-based on-line retailer selling books, videos and

electronic games as well as computer hardware and software, had a 1998

turnover of around pounds 75 million. It will compete with established

retailers like Amazon.Com.

With a local language web site for each European country included in the

launch, Buy.Com aims to establish itself as a mainstream, user-friendly

consumer brand.

Shandwick intends to build a presence for Buy.Com through national

consumer and lifestyle press in each country in addition to raising the

retailer’s profile in the broadcast media.
