THE HAGUE: US internet retailer Buy.Com has appointed Shandwick
Netherlands to promote its pan-European launch, scheduled for

Shandwick’s Dutch operation, based in The Hague, won the account, which
commands a six-figure budget, late last month, after a three-way pitch
against Burson-Marsteller and Hill and Knowlton.
Shandwick Netherlands managing director Joan Clements will start
co-ordinating the launch in May.
Buy.Com, a US-based on-line retailer selling books, videos and
electronic games as well as computer hardware and software, had a 1998
turnover of around pounds 75 million. It will compete with established
retailers like Amazon.Com.
With a local language web site for each European country included in the
launch, Buy.Com aims to establish itself as a mainstream, user-friendly
Shandwick intends to build a presence for Buy.Com through national
consumer and lifestyle press in each country in addition to raising the
retailer’s profile in the broadcast media.
