The States of Jersey Financial Services Department has appointed
its first communications manager as it attempts to position the island
as an international finance centre. Rozena Newell leaves Paragon
Communications, where she was an account manager, to take the job.
Newell will work closely with the Financial Services Department’s
Finance and Economics Committee to plan a promotional strategy for its
launch as an independent commission later this year.
The new commission will operate as Jersey’s independent financial
services regulator with responsibility for supervision, development and
promotion of the industry. It will work more closely than the existing
committee with representatives of the financial services industry who
will be eligible to sit on its board.
Newell’s other tasks include running the Financial Services Department’s
press office and handling onshore and offshore media. She will also be a
point of contact for public and finance industry enquiries.
Despite Newell’s appointment the States of Jersey will retain Shandwick
Consultants to work on developing the image of the island’s financial
services industry in the UK. Newell said: ’We will continue to use
Shandwick but will redefine their role.’
The financial services industry accounts for 54 per cent of Jersey’s GDP
and employs 10,000 people.
