Bill Hamilton has quit as head of campaigns and communications at the

UK’s largest white-collar union, the Manufacturing, Science and Finance

union (MSF).

Hamilton, whose CV includes a 13-year stint in local government town

planning, left two weeks ago to join Tesco’s property and acquisitions

division as a planning executive. He had previously worked with Tesco as

an associate director of Good Relations.

He is one of a team reporting to Tesco property acquisitions director

Tony Eggs. The division is responsible for acquiring sites for Tesco

stores, which involves dealing with the Department of Environment on

issues such as the effect of the proposed store on traffic congestion.

Hamilton joined MSF in January 1995, as a replacement for John Healey,

now head of campaigns and communications at the TUC. He ran the union’s

small in-house team of four, including publishing and editorial staff.

The union is this week advertising for a permanent replacement for

Hamilton. Meanwhile it has brought in freelance journalist Mary

O’Carroll to cover the job temporarily.
