Those waiting to hear who would succeed Alan Preece as

communications director at the University of East Anglia will be glad to

hear that an appointment has finally been made. After months of

consideration the University has decided to appoint, er, Alan

Preece.

Preece left East Anglia earlier this year to join brewer

Carlsberg-Tetley as its PR chief (PR Week, 20 March). But he spent only

two months in the job and has now returned to his old employer.

Sources close to Carlsberg-Tetley suggest that when Preece arrived for

work in May he discovered that PR at the brewery was structured in a way

he did not feel comfortable with - namely that each brand director has

lead responsibility in their area for PR, leaving very little control in

the hands of the PR chief. And the brewery’s agency, Scope Ketchum,

reports to the board directors when working in their areas.

Preece is very positive about his return to East Anglia. Not only has

the University taken steps to strengthen its communications during his

absence but he will also get to see more of his wife, who is a lecturer

there.
