United Distillers and Vintners (UDV), the new wine and spirit

division of food and drink giant Diageo, has appointed Charlie Mann to

head PR for the company’s UK brands portfolio.

UDV UK was created last month in a merger between GrandMet’s

International Distillers and Vintners IDV and Guinness’ United

Distillers. The two parent companies merged to form Diageo last

year.

The drinks division started operating with 480 staff, and is now the

biggest wine and spirits company in the UK.

Mann was PR manager for United Distillers, heading a team of two for the

two years leading up to the merger. His previous experience includes

four-and-a-half years as senior brand PR manager for Bass brewery.

Mann’s counterpart at IDV, Jean Crossley is close to retirement age and

working for the new division in an advisory capacity.

As PR manager for UDV’s Harlow-based UK operation, Mann will report to

marketing director Tony Schouller, and will oversee a team of six

consultants responsible for all public relations, sponsorship and

consumer services activity for the company’s UK portfolio. The list of

brands under his remit includes drinks market leaders Smirnoff, Baileys,

Jack Daniel’s and Gordon’s Gin.

UDV as a whole is now the world’s largest spirit and wine company,

boasting 18 of the world’s top 100 brands, and with chains in more than

200 countries.

The comnpany has operating profits of pounds 1.3 billion, which account

for 60 per cent of Diageo’s overall profits.
