Unisys reviews PR for its computer division

Unisys, the IT giant, has put pan-European PR for its Computer Systems Group division up for review.

Unisys, the IT giant, has put pan-European PR for its Computer

Systems Group division up for review.

One of three business units within the company, CSG manufactures

computer products ranging from PCs to mainframes. Public relations

across Europe was previously managed by Manning Selvage and Lee,

although the division is now seeking to hire separate consultancies for

different country markets.

In the UK three agencies - Scope Ketchum, Grant Butler Coomber and Keene

Communications - have been shortlisted and communications managers in

the rest of Europe are reviewing their own PR needs. The UK account

alone is believed to be worth around pounds 70,000 in annual fees.

Appointments are expected to be made by the end of this month.

Chris Alder, Unisys’ director of media and public relations for Europe,

explained that the review was partly a standard annual review of PR and

partly a response to the company’s restructuring last year.

At the beginning of 1996 Unisys split into Information Services Group,

Global Customer Services and Computer Systems Group to handle consulting

and systems integration, maintenance and desk top services and computer

products respectively.

Keene Communications - which acquired Bogarde Communications in June

last year - handles product PR for Unisys ISG and corporate relations

for Unisys itself.

GBC has worked for Unisys GCS since November, when the division embarked

on a similar shake-up of its public relations resourcing. European PR

manager Imogen Bailey is still in the process of recruiting agencies in

Belgium, Italy, Portugal and Austria.

It is unclear whether Unisys CSG’s selected UK agency will report to

Chris Alder or to marketing communications manager Karen Gregory. Alder

said the reporting structure had yet to be decided.
