Public Affairs: Lobbying Target - Desmond Swayne, parliamentary private secretary to Tory leader

He may not be part of the 'Notting Hill set', but Swayne is a close aide of David Cameron and may well follow him into Downing Street.

Ten-second biography

Swayne was elected Tory MP for the New Forest West in 1997 and has held shadow ministerial portfolios for Northern Ireland, health and defence. In 2004, he was appointed PPS to then leader Michael Howard. When Cameron took over in 2005, Swayne remained in post.

What's his background

Born in 1956, he was educated at Bedford School and St Andrews University. He worked as an economics teacher and then a risk systems manager at the RBS.

Where does he sit politically?

He may be close to the leader, but Swayne is not a typical Cameroon. He has voted against equal gay rights and has called for tougher law and order policies.

Why is he one to watch?

Swayne has been at Cameron's side for almost four years and will be hoping to follow his boss into Downing Street should Cameron become Prime Minister.

Something I might not have known

Swayne swims a quarter of a mile in the Serpentine lake daily throughout the year when Parliament is in session. He is said to start his daily swim at 7am.
