NEWS: McBride leaves VSO position to Help the Aged

Help the Aged has named Betty McBride as its new head of media relations.

Help the Aged has named Betty McBride as its new head of media

relations.

McBride, who currently holds the same title at international development

charity Voluntary Service Overseas, joins Help the Aged later this month

as head of its ten-strong PR and media relations team.

She replaces Amanda Barnes, a former Save the Children press office

chief, who has become a freelance but who continues to work part-time as

Help the Aged’s international press officer.

McBride, who trained as a journalist and has worked as a BBC documentary

director, said she aimed to increase the profile of Help the Aged by

raising the profile of the press and PR team.

‘I think the regional coverage Help the Aged gets must be some of the

finest in the world,’ she said.

‘The charity is a centre of excellence and we now need to develop

national coverage that reflects that.

‘They need someone in the engine room and I am a big engine room lady,’

she said.

McBride, who has headed VSO’s four-strong media relations unit since

early last year, is succeeded by VSO press officer Simon Watts.
