DIARY: Taking Anglo-German relations to new heights

John Spencer, who ran PR firm Lexington International before

heading Hill and Knowlton’s Middle East network, is still a high flier

at his own agency John Spencer Associates.

He will handle PR for a World War One bi-plane called the Silver Queen

which is to fly to South Africa from London next month in celebration of

the 75th anniversary of its first flight - the first from London to Cape

Town.

Spencer tells me that he won’t actually be flying the aircraft, but will

concentrate on gaining coverage for the flight and its sponsors. He says

that main sponsor Shell has already attracted good publicity from the

campaign. But it seems that one angle he was working on has been

shelved.

A key sponsor is BMW Munich, which built the plane’s new engines. ’So

much for my ’think British’ campaign,’ he says.

It does seem ironic that Spencer should be handling PR for a German

company on the back of a plane which was constructed as a bomber to

destroy German targets.
