DUBAI: German national airline Lufthansa has appointed Hill and

Knowlton to promote it in ten countries across the Middle East as part

of the airline’s ongoing global communications review.

The account, which was awarded after a five-way competitive pitch, will

be coordinated from H&K’s Dubai office and will cover the United Arab

Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Lebanon, Jordan,

Syria and Yemen.

The agency’s initial brief covers media relations and raising the

company’s profile among both business and leisure travellers.

Lufthansa’s PR in the Arabian peninsula was previously handled by

Dubai-based agency Intermarkets, which also pitched for the account.

Markus Ruediger, senior manager, corporate communications for south east

Europe, Africa and the Middle East, said: ’These countries are a growing

market for us. We have had representation out there but need to increase

our presence.’

Lufthansa is the second largest international passenger carrier in the

world. It belongs to the Star Alliance Network, an agreement whose

members also include Air Canada, United Airlines, SAS and Thai Airways

International.

- Lufthansa has appointed Rowland Budapest as its first retained agency

in Hungary. Head of corporate communications for the UK, northern and

eastern Europe, Dale Lawrence, is also seeking agencies in Poland and

Russia.
