The Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) has named Fran

Michelman, former head of Mobil Oil Corporation’s international arts and

sports sponsorship, as its vice-president for public relations.

The ATP is the governing body of the men’s world tennis tour, of which

Pete Sampras is the current number one.

Michelman will be responsible for developing the tour’s image outside

the dedicated tennis media. She will also oversee other functions of the

tour including its corporate communications, creative services and

general publicity.

Michelman will join current PR vice-president Graeme Agars to spearhead

the tour’s communications and public relations worldwide. Agars will now

become the vice-president of the ATP tour’s newly created communications

and media relations portfolio.

He said: ’Fran will be taking the message of tennis across the normal

parameters, from business magazines to consumer magazines like GQ.’

Michelman and Agars will be responsible for around 120 members of staff

who cover over 70 events worldwide.

Michelman has worked as a consultant to the US Track and Field

Federation and the ATP tour’s own London-based agency, Championship

Her professional background also covers spells in advertising,

marketing, television production and contract negotiation and

sponsorship. She has also authored a book on this subject.

Larry Scott, the ATP Tour chief operating officer said: ’Fran is a very

welcome addition to the ATP tour team. She brings with her a broad

experience in areas of public relations, promotion and sports

marketing.’
