Welsh First Secretary Alun Michael is seeking a communications

director to head the new Welsh Assembly’s press and PR operation. The

director will report to Michael and take over the remit currently held

by Welsh Office information director Pat Wilson.

Wilson is moving to London to become press secretary to the new

secretary of state for Wales, who has not been appointed yet following

Michael’s election last month (PR Week, 8 January). Wilson will

initially head a small team of two or three.

The new director will oversee a 30-strong team which is currently in the

process of expanding. These PROs will be split between Cathays Park, the

current headquarters of the Welsh Office, and Crickhowell House, the

Assembly’s temporary home.

The communications chief’s deputy and number three have already been

named. They are head of news Des Clifford and chief press officer Alan

Cummins. Clifford and Cummins move up one grade from their former posts

in the Welsh Office information division.

The Assembly was officially opened last week and the Welsh Secretary’s

powers transfer to the First Secretary at the end of this month.
