Diary: Black’s advice is black and white, but his past is more of a grey area

Loaded’s Adam Black delivered some choice words of advice on client

liaison at last week’s IPR Meet the Editors seminar.

’Tell the bloody client that it’s not going to get any bloody coverage,’

the laddish one advised, ’It goes back to educating your client ...

(they have) unrealistic ideas about how they can manipulate the media.

Clients are flipping (I may have misheard that word at the back)

mental.’

Strangely, Julian Henry, deputy managing director of Lynne Franks PR,

tells me Black himself is not always unreservedly straight-talking with

clients.

Henry, who recruited Black as a PR trainee a mere four years ago, says:

’Adam may have felt all that stuff when he was with us, but he certainly

never articulated it. He could smooth talk clients along with the best

of them.

’He was a pretty green, shy and well behaved young man when I knew him -

and in our eyes he still is.’

And did Loaded’s future commissioning editor display a suitably rakish

attitude to his female colleagues?

’He was very well intentioned,’ says Henry, after a slight pause, ’but

never enough to be taken seriously by the professional and polished

young ladies at Lynne Franks.’
