DIARY: Simnett is poles apart from his namesake

Wanderlust seems to have claimed an unusually high number of public

relations practitioners so far this year.

Whether it is cycling 250 miles around Israel (PR Week, 16 February) or

trekking across southern Chile (PR Week, 19 January), public relations

people everywhere seem to be answering the call of the wild.

But A Plus director Jonathan Simnett is definitely not one of them. A

rather bewildered Simnett was contacted last week by a journalist from

the London Recorder newspaper group wanting to know if he was the very

same John Simnett, an Arctic explorer from Brentwood planning a hike

across the polar ice caps.

Definitely not, says Simnett. ‘I am a fan of the great outdoors,’ he

concedes, ‘but I think trekking down the M4 every morning is quite

enough for me. The idea of tramping across the frozen wastes is a bit

much. It’s been cold enough here in Slough without having to go all the

way to the North Pole.’
