Drinks giant International Distillers & Vintners (IDV) has appointed its

first director of internal communications.

John Harben will join the company next week with a brief to establish

formal communications with the IDV’s 10,000 employees in 55 countries.

Harben, principal consultant at the European information management

company Sema Group, will report to IDV’s director of corporate affairs

Edwin Beckett, head of the firm’s seven-strong communications division.

IDV, which manufactures brands such as Smirnoff, Baileys and J&B, is

aiming to improve staff relations and encourage feedback from employees.

Internal communications was previously handled mainly by IDV’s director

of corporate communications Dillon Welchman who will now focus on

external relations.

The company also relied on its global newspaper IDV News to talk to its

staff.

As well as working to improve employee relations Harben will take

responsibility for the company’s world-wide quality programme Closer to

My Customer, a company-wide drive to improve customer service.

‘There is a growing need for a top class person to focus on internal

communications,’ said Welchman. ‘This is something we have had in mind

for some time,’ he added.
