Mark Flannagan, former BBC senior corporate press officer, has joined

the Royal College of Nursing as its first assistant director of external

affairs.

Flannagan, 32, will manage the RCN’s media and parliamentary teams under

director of external affairs Joanne Rule. The RCN does not currently use

parliamentary or media agencies and Flannagan stressed he had no plans

to change that emphasis or to re-organise his twoteams.

He told PR Week: ‘Joanne Rule is a very effective director but I will

now be able to provide a ‘second step’. This should be helpful for the

teams as they will have a second point of referral on day-to-day

issues.’

Before joining the BBC, where he dealt with digital terrestrial

broadcasting, Flannagan was deputy director at Action on Smoking and

Health.
