Five climate change activists from Plane Stupid chained themselves to the wheels of private plane at London City Airport. The protesters were dressed in pinstripe suits and bower hats.
Why the protest?
The group said the ‘human wheel clamp’ was a protest against the ‘selfishness of private jet use’. Spokeswoman Nancy Birch said: ‘small jets emit between five and 10 times more carbon per passenger than commercial flights. It's time they were grounded for good.’
What has the response been?
Police told the press they arrested four men and one woman on suspicion of aggravated trespass and criminal damage and that the airport remained open. According to trade title Flight International, the airport said the protest was in vain, because the aeroplane in question had already been grounded for technical problems so it ‘was not going anywhere’.
How did the media cover it?
The Daily Telegraph, the London Evening Standard, bbc.co.uk and the Edinburgh Evening News all reported the story. The Londonist.com said this protest was ‘a more fitting target’ than the group's previous protest at Stansted airport last December, which inconvenienced ‘hard-working families’.
