Protesters: Guerrilla gardeners
Location: Villages near Heathrow Airport
Date: 25 May
Heathrow residents and environmental activists replanted hundreds of plants from this year's Chelsea Flower show. Residents of nearby villages joined forces with activists from Plane Stupid, Climate Rush, Greenpeace and Guerrilla Gardening. The plants were transported to three villages earmarked for demolition when BAA builds a third runway.
Why the protest?
Residents are upset that BAA is threatening to destroy their homes, communities and history. They wanted to build gardens to highlight the destruction a runway would cause. Environmental activists are concerned the third runway will cause global warming by increasing carbon emissions.
How did BAA respond?
BAA was not quoted in any of the articles about the guerilla gardeners.
How did the media cover it?
The Daily Telegraph's website hosted a video of the gardeners. The Guardian published a blog by Guerrilla Gardening's Richard Reynolds, who spilled the beans on what happened during the replanting. Horticulture Week wrote a article with quotes from landscape designer Thomas Hoblyn and environmentalist Zac Goldsmith. The Independent's diary Pandora also wrote about the protest, calling the gardeners 'flower-power champions'.
