LGA appoints The Independent's Ben Russell

The Local Government Association (LGA) has appointed Ben Russell, The Independent's political and home affairs correspondent as its interim head of news.

Russell will be take over the LGA's five-strong media team from Richard Stokoe, who is leaving for a five-month unpaid career break.
 
LGA programme director for media & campaigns Edward Welsh said: ‘As the public sector faces tough financial times and with a general election looming, Ben's political and journalistic experience will be a great asset to the LGA.’
 
Russell said: ‘The work of the LGA has consistently been setting the agenda in the national news and I want to ensure that this moves up another gear over the coming weeks and months.’
