Replacing Hill & Knowlton-bound Flic Howard-Allen, Fry will oversee the retail giant's product and corporate PR teams as well as its government, internal and investor relations functions.

‘It is an extremely exciting job and very exciting company,' Fry said. ‘It's not an opportunity you walk past. Right now is a fabulous time to be joining the business.'

Fry will start his role on 22 April. He has been at Tulchan since January 2006 and has worked closely with the M&S communications team throughout that time as Tulchan is the firm's retained financial comms agency.

He has considerable corporate experience, having served as comms director at Scottish Power before his move into the agency world. He was also Sainsbury's group comms director from 1996 to 2000, and previously led comms at Eurotunnel for two years and from 1990 as well as holding the top UK comms role at AT&T.

In December PRWeek broke the story that Howard-Allen was quitting M&S after seven years to join Hill & Knowlton as senior client services director.
