Football League brings in specialist to beef up comms

The Football League has appointed Fleishman-Hillard's top crisis comms expert as part of a wider drive to improve its communications.

New signing: Gavin Megaw
New signing: Gavin Megaw

Gavin Megaw will join the body in May as its first director of external affairs, reporting to Football League chairman Lord Mawhinney. Megaw is currently a board director and head of corporate comms and issues management at Fleishman. The Football League is responsible for the Coca-Cola Football League – comprising the Championship, League One and League Two – and the Carling Cup, as well as reserve and youth football.

Mawhinney, former Conservative Party chairman, told PRWeek: ‘We have not had a specific focus on external relations before. We are getting serious in this area and Gavin will review our external relationships and make proposals about how they will be strengthened or improved, or new ones developed.’

He said this entailed ‘keeping a very professional eye on our relations with the media’, but insisted the new role was a long-term plan rather than a reaction to recent headlines.

Megaw will work closely with Football League head of comms John Nagle.

Fleishman-Hillard said Megaw would be replaced by senior consultant David Hart.
