Paul Tyrrell will be working with Bell Pottinger North on an exclusive consultancy basis to help build the firm's presence in the sporting sector.

The former PR chief of ITV Sport left Manchester City in October after a period of gardening leave.

He spent almost five years with the club and led City through its high-profile takeover by ex-Thai leader Thaksin Shinawatra before he subsequently sold it to the Abu Dhabi investment group led by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

Tyrrell said: ‘There is a great opportunity here - no one else in the North West has a dedicated sports practice. There is so much work to be done - not only with high profile football teams but also with small clubs and to support major sponsors.'

Bell Pottinger North director, John Butters said: "[Tyrrell] is one of the most experienced and talented PR operators in the sports business and will add value and credibility to our offering. Paul knows how clubs operate and is connected to the major players in the business. We already have some interesting opportunities to work on together.'
