Milk scandal is a lesson for the West ..

The PR handling of the recent spate of milk scandals has been praised (News, 26 September).

But flustered attempts to distance Western companies from the unjustifiable pause before recall must be addressed.

Western businesses are not going to abstain from offshoring - particularly in the current economic downturn. But no-one would assert that financial gain should be at the expense of consumer safety. There must be a degree of accountability from the industry and best practice rigorously pursued.

Globalised companies must have arrangements in place that can spring into action as soon as a disaster occurs.
