Public Sector: Police pressure

The police dragged Home Secretary Jacqui Smith into an embarrassing race row last weekend, when at least 20 police forces refused to co-operate with the first audit into the treatment of Muslim and black officers. The spat threatened to damage the reputation of both the police and the Home Office. Smith was pressured to intervene by the National Association of Muslim Police.
