Brunswick to back Punch

Punch Taverns has boosted its financial support as it launches a bid for competitor bar, pub and restaurant group Mitchells & Butlers.

Brunswick has been drafted in to support retained agency College Hill, which has worked with Punch for almost five years (PRWeek, 21 March 2003). Brunswick's appointment arrives at the same time as Goldman Sachs, which is the company's financial adviser on the deal alongside Morgan Stanley.

Partner Simon Sporborg heads the Brunswick account, while College Hill has partners Justine Warren and Matthew Smallwood advising.

Punch has offered £2bn for Mitchells & Butlers, which retains Finsbury. If successful, Punch's sales could double - vital as spending slows and the full effect of the smoking ban is felt.

Burton-on-Trent-based Punch and Birmingham-based Mitchells would each control 50 per cent of the combined business.

Mitchells & Butlers own All Bar One, Vintage Inns and O'Neill's chains. Punch Taverns owns about 9,500 tenanted and managed pubs.
