The Wine and Spirit Trade Association has appointed its first head of comms amid increased scrutiny on the drinks industry.

Gavin Partington leaves his current role as director at Parys Communications in February, to take responsibility for the industry body’s comms strategy and act as principal media spokesperson.

The creation of the new role follows increased political and media interest in the drinks industry and its connection with underage drinking and antisocial behaviour.

Before moving into corporate communications, Partington worked as political editor at GMTV. He has also worked as a consultant at Brunswick.

The association has 321 member companies including Diageo and oddbins, and is the only UK organisation representing the whole of the wine and spirit supply chain.
