Connect loses director to LGIU

Connect Public Affairs director Andy Sawford has been appointed chief executive of the Local Government Information Unit (LGIU).

Sawford joined Connect in 2004, having previously worked for a number of Labour MPs including Rosie Winterton, now a minister in the Department for Transport, and Phil Hope, now based in the Cabinet Office.

He joins the local government specialist body next month as it attempts to position itself as a centre-ground think-tank and lobbying organisation that engages all shades of political opinion.

LGIU chairman Dave Wilcox said: 'Andy brings experience of providing services to councils and his role in setting up the All Party Parliamentary Group on local government to improve the central-local dialogue is an example of his innovative approach.'

Sawford replaces Dr Tim Thorogood, who is to become chief executive of the Falkland Islands Government.
