Network Rail lobbyist secures ‘dream’ rail position

One of Network Rail’s eight-strong public affairs team is leaving to oversee comms at North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR).

Phil Bustard is quitting his post as public affairs manager to become the railway’s marketing and external affairs manager.

The NYMR runs for 18 miles through the North York Moors National Park and pulls in more than 300,000 visitors a year.

Bustard said he had landed his ‘dream job’. He added: ‘We need to maintain momentum, build our profile and develop new partnerships.’

Network rail employs seven regional public affairs managers, reporting to director of public affairs Garry White. Before joining Network Rail in 2003, Bustard was external relations manager at GNER.

Earlier in his career, he worked in-house at Kent County Council when the comms team was headed by Dick Fedorcio, now Metropolitan Police Service public affairs director.
