Trust in doctors rocked according to CIPR workshop

Healthcare ‘scare stories' are undermining patients' faith in doctors, a CIPR workshop has heard.

GP Dawn Harper was speaking at the ‘impact of the media on patients and patient groups’ event last week.

She said: ‘Readers and listeners take what is reported in the media on board and in some cases can believe it to have more truth that what GPs say. Doctors should have a better insight than patients into the best treatment for them.’

However, Harper also said that in many cases healthcare stories can save lives by prompting more patients to have healthcare checks.

Roche’s public affairs manager Geoffrey Henning also spoke at the workshop. He warned that the Government had ‘opened Pandora’s Box’ by supporting the patient choice agenda.
