Letter - The aviation industry does have supporters

Matt Fearnley can rest assured (Letters, 2 November). There is a voice of reason and objectivity to counter the environmental demonisation of aviation.

Recently established, the Omega Partnership of UK universities works with objective independence to identify a sustainable way forward for aviation and to assemble credible data for productive debate.

Yes, aviation may have done itself no favours in the way it manages its communications. And, yes, the downsides are often overplayed given that it only accounts for two per cent of global CO2. But the UK industry has woken up to the challenge.

If higher taxes and ticket prices are not to be the Government's only solution, there has to be a credible strategy that points to action on emissions to offset the rise in traffic, as well as more efficient air traffic management.

Visionary work to unlock revolutionary technology for the benefit of the environment is required as much as communicating the value of aviation to society and the economy.
