Agencies scoop football briefs

The media-shy billionaire attempting to acquire Ipswich Town FC has turned to Gavin Anderson to keep him out of the news.

Marcus Evans has called in the City agency to provide a press office function. It will field calls and provide comment on behalf of Evans, who has never given a press interview himself.

Gavin Anderson associate director Michael Turner said: ‘Part of our role is maintaining the low profile of Mr Evans, making sure he’s not splashed all over the press.’

Private investment from Evans in Ipswich Town is expected to involve the purchase of approximately £32m of external debt, as well as an additional investment of £12m through the issue of new shares by the club.

The Gavin Anderson team will be led by global chief executive Richard Constant.

Meanwhile... Stockport County FC has appointed Cheshire-based Croft PR to handle local and regional media relations. The agency is charged with raising awareness of the club’s off-field activities to show how it is engaging with local businesses and the community.

Continuing the football theme, Manchester agency Smith & Smith PR is to promote National Football Museum’s Hall of Fame 2007.

The agency has won an account to manage media coverage of the event, which takes place at Old Trafford on 15 November, attended by football stars including Dennis Bergkamp, Peter Beardsley, Graeme Souness and Nobby Stiles.
