‘Ethical’ cigarette brand hires help

‘Ethically sourced’ cigarette brand 1st Nation has app­ointed its first PR agency as it launches in the UK this week.

Haygarth is charged with handling trade and consumer media relations. It secured the brief following a pitch against an undisclosed agency.

1st Nation claims to be the UK’s first ethically sourced cigarette brand. The cigarettes are made using natural tobacco. It is claimed their production benefits independent farmers in Malawi and native Mohawk tobacco manufacturers.

1st Nation MD Sean Glynn said: ‘The brand will appeal to smokers in the 10 million UK homes that are now buying Fairtrade products.’

The cigarette brand does not carry the official Fairtrade logo but 1st Nation is hoping to achieve the status.

A spokeswoman for the Fairtrade Foundation said: ‘We don’t have any plans to approve tobacco products, but it is not something we would completely discount.’
