Letter - ...but it spends a fortune in doing so

You cite the COI's figures for public sector PR spend in 2006-07 of £22.7m (Features, 31 August). This is, of course, a gross underestimate: the public sector's PR-related salary bill alone is well over £550m. Its total PR spend may be nearer to £1bn.

It is also interesting to note the public sector's ad spend of £120m is monitored and vetted by the Advisory Committee on Advertising - an independent, expert body reporting to the Cabinet Office - to ensure best value for taxpayers. No such 'oversight' body exists for the very much larger PR spend, and my suggestions to the Cabinet Office that such a body should be established have met with no response. Perhaps this should be reviewed?

Tom Wells, managing director, Gyroscope.
