Sputnik declined to re-pitch for the account, which is believed to include the majority of Speedo UK’s consumer activity as well as international Olympic-based and branding work.
Sputnik will continue to work until October, when it is planned that the new agency will be appointed.
Speedo sponsors many Olympic athletes; ‘Team Speedo’ includes US swimmers Michael Phelps and Amanda Beard, Australian Grant Hackett and Kosuke Kitajima from Japan.
The brand’s profile will be high in the run-up to Beijing 2008 and London 2012. Speedo is owned by Pentland Brands, which owns the Boxfresh, Red or Dead and Ellesse brands. Sputnik partner Lucy Webb said: ‘We have declined the invitation to pitch. It has been a privilege to be part of the brand and the results have led to exceptional business for our agency.’
Webb pointed out that the agency won the Sports Industry Award 2005 for ‘Best use of PR in a Sport Campaign’ for its launch of Speedo’s Fastskin FSII swimsuit ahead of the Olympic Games in Athens.
The agency also continues to work with Pentland through its account with Wellington boot manufacturer Hunter.
