For those of us who practise PR outside of the major centres, finding good places to entertain clients can be tricky. This is certainly the case in Somerset.
Clavelshay Barn is located in an idyllic spot in the foothills of the Quantocks but, surprisingly, is only four miles from the M5. This puts it in easy reach of most of both Bristol and Exeter and everywhere in between.
Set up two years ago as an offshoot of the farm business run by her husband, Sue Milverton's former cider mill has the atmosphere of a secret country hideaway.
The dining room is strikingly decorated with portraits by Jackie Spurrier of some of the animals you might find on your plate, as the meat is sourced from the farm itself wherever possible. At Clavelshay, the phrase 'fresh, local produce' means exactly that; even the fruit juice and beer is made nearby, while some of the wines are made at a vineyard just minutes away.
Chef John McAteer, who makes everything except the ice cream himself, has a fine eye for detail - never before have I been asked how I'd like my vegetables cooked.
Clavelshay can be hired by the day for training sessions, press events or other functions.
