The foundation is being set up by descendants of the famous explorer Ernest Shackleton and aims to give out 30 grants a year, of £10,000 each, to bold, innovative and useful projects.

The main fundraising event will occur in October 2008 when a team made up of Shackleton’s descendants and comrades will retrace his trek to the South Pole. It is hoped that the trek will raise £10m for the foundation.

Van Communications will act as the global press office during the 80-day, 850-mile trek and is currently focusing on securing a headline sponsor.

The agency will also generate feature articles and negotiate the adventurers’ exclusive diary rights.

Director Mark Cooper leads the Shackleton account, reporting in to head of fundraising David Cornell.
