The supermarket chain hopes that Bircham Dyson Bell can win over politicians and local residents who may be opposed to the expansion blueprint.

It has briefed the legal firm’s public affairs team to liaise with local communities who will be affected.

The final number of stores due to be expanded is not yet decided.

The move comes in the midst of an investigation by the Competition Commission into allegations of unfair practices within the UK’s grocery industry.
