Shurmer bags BBC Wales comms job

BBC Wales has unveiled former Plaid Cymru comms head Alun Shurmer as its new head of communications.

Shurmer recently spent 15 months managing Plaid Cymru’s comms team. Before this, he worked at Transport for London,   where he was a member of the media relations team during the 2005 London bombings.

Shurmer, who is originally from Wales, will start at BBC Wales in August and will report to the station’s head of marketing, communications and audiences Rhodri Talfan Davies.

At Plaid Cymru, 29-year-old Shurmer was responsible for the party’s comms strategy during the last Welsh Assembly election campaign in May 2007.

At TfL, his remit included managing comms for the congestion charge scheme.

BBC Wales’ comms team recently scored national coverage when former child star Donny Osmond traced his roots back to the town of Merthyr Tydfil. The resulting documentary and concert were broadcast on BBC Wales and BBC Radio Wales.
