Established in Spain last year, FON allows its customers to access WiFi for free rather than relying on paid WiFi.
The Media Foundry, the PR arm of media conglomerate Cagney, has been appointed for the UK launch and to co-ordinate comms across Europe after a competitive pitch. The agency will target trade and consumer media and will also liaise with FON’s US and Asian agencies.
The Media Foundry MD Patrick Barrett will lead the launch with a team of five, reporting directly to international PR manager for FON Tania Cavada.
FON itself is backed by $21.7m (£10.8m) in investments by Google, Skype, Sequioa Capital and Index Ventures, among others. Thus far, the WiFi network has 400,000 registered users across 140 countries.
