Russell joins Egg as comms chief as merger settles

Credit card company Egg has installed a new head of communications following its purchase by Citigroup in May.

Adrian Russell’s first task will be to rebuild the comms team which was decimated by a mass exit of mid-ranking staff last year.

Russell takes the top comms role for the combined Egg and Citi UK Consumer businesses.
Previously head of media relations for Citi’s EMEA consumer regional office, his appointment marks the start of a recruitment drive at the newly merged
business.

According to Egg media relations manager Rachel Roe, Russell has been mandated to recruit a full communications team, with plans to fill between six and eight press officer roles.

Following Prudential’s buyout of Egg last year, Egg’s head of communications Emma Byrne was made redundant (PRWeek, 24 March 2006), resulting in a mass exodus of its comms staff.

The walkout included the departure of public affairs head Ilan Jacobs, who moved to GE Money as its first UK head of government relations (PRWeek, 24 March 2006).
