Cuba has brought in agency backing as it looks to open up its national culture to the UK.

The socialist republic wants MasonRose to convey the message that Cuban culture is about more than cigars, salsa and the Buena Vista Social Club.

‘Cuba is a small powerful island in the Caribbean, grossly misunderstood by the Western world,' said MasonRose PR director Lysbeth Fox. ‘We believe a cultural exchange will be of enormous benefit to the United Kingdom and Cuba in building new and exciting cultural bridges.'

The agency will focus on promoting the Cuban Cultural Festival, which runs from May to September next year, backed by the Cuban Cultural Ministry and the London Embassy. ‘The festival will be a complete cultural exchange between the UK and Cuba,' promised Fox.
