Indie ed recalls his cordless pyjamas

The Independent editor-in-chief Simon Kelner caused a few titters at PRWeek's PR and the Media conference earlier this week.

Asked his views on new media, Kelner said: 'I don't believe I'm a dinosaur, but I do find all this mobile and wireless technology bamboozling. Vodcast, podcast, bathcast... I'm old enough to remember the excitement of cordless pyjamas.'

He went on to warn PROs against being overfamiliar with journalists. 'If I get an invitation that starts "Dear Simon", I throw it straight in the bin.'

McDonald's Nick Hindle was duly keen to toe the line in a Q&A session when he addressed Kelner, starting with: 'Simon, or Mr Kelner as I should call you...'

Incidentally, his question was whether Kelner was worried about newspaper ad revenue following consumers to new media.

Kelner replied cheerfully: 'Well, The Indy doesn't make any money.'
