Castrol takes on football mantle

LONDON: Car oil brand Castrol is using two UK-based agencies to promote its sponsorship of next year's UEFA Euro 2008 football tournament.

BP-owned Castrol has brought in Circle Communications as its UK agency. Meanwhile, Hill & Knowlton has been appointed as its ‘European hub', to advise across all competing nations from Eng­land to Russia. Both companies won competitive pitches.

Castrol is a lead sponsor of the tournament. Andy Sutherd­en, MD of sports, marketing and sponsorship at H&K, described the oil brand as ‘football virgins' but added that it had ambitions to become a credible sponsor of the sport.

Sutherden reports to European marketing director Roy Williamson. He said Castrol planned to implement ‘fewer, bigger and more powerful marketing campaigns'.
