CRE launches guide to countering far-right groups

The Commission For Racial Equality has published an information pack that deals with the PR implications of extremist campaigns.

With the May local elections nearing, 'Defeating Organised Racial Hatred' is available to any organisation that deals with the issues of race and ethnicity, including local authorities, community groups and charities.

CRE director of policy and public sector Nick Johnson said: 'Maintaining and promoting good race relations is a job for everybody. PR is very much part of that. There is a need for guidance to help councils, schools and community organisations challenge inaccurate claims about the groups they serve.'

The pack warns of the false or misleading claims often made by extremist groups. These include inflating the numbers of asylum seekers and refugees, claims that ethnic minorities commit more crimes than white people, and suggestions that all Muslims support terrorism.

PROs are encouraged to challenge such perceptions through the presentation of plain facts.
