Deal watch: Maitland enjoys bumper month with O2 and BOC

Completion of the £17.7bn acquisition of O2 by Telefonica propelled Maitland and Hudson Sandler to the top of March’s Deal Watch.

Maitland's involvement in the month's third-biggest deal, representing gas producer BOC Group over an £8.2bn bid from Linde, helped to seal a bumper month for the agency.

Hudson Sandler nudged ahead of Finsbury, which advised Vodafone on the proposed sale of its Japanese mobile arm to Softbank
Corporation.

Finsbury was involved in both sides of the £5.9bn bid for VNU by consortium Valcon Acquisitions. It acted both for the publisher and for private equity firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts, one of six firms forming the consortium. US-based Kekst & Company made a rare appearance in the table thanks to its involvement advising Valcon as a whole.

Finsbury also advised Kesa Electricals on its £1.7bn institutional buyout.

Brunswick and Financial Dynamics amassed the highest number of deals in March, working on 22 and 23 respectively.

Brunswick advised Linde over its bid for BOC Group, and worked on both sides of L'Oréal's £652m bid for The Body Shop, securing fourth place in the chart.

Smithfield slipped from third to seventh, but its deal value was only £300,000 less than in February, highlighting the weight of financial PR activity this month.

Similarly Cardew, which advised Guernsey-based Russian real-estate firm Raven Russia, also fell – from third to eighth – but posted only £400,000 less in deal value than last month.

Aura Financial completed the top ten with a single £982,000 deal – advising Xstrata in its bid for a minority stake in Colombia-based Correjon Coal Company.
