Poet Betjeman to get youth drive

The daughter of poet John Betjeman has signed up an agency to introduce his works to a younger audience.

This year marks the centenary of the poet's birth, and Candida Lycett Green has called in Midas PR to help co-ordinate a series of events celebrating his life and work.

Midas chairman Tony Mulliken said Green wanted to demonstrate Betjeman's relevance to a younger audience and renew public interest in poetry.

A Young People's Poetry Competition will be promoted by celebrity Betjeman fans in youth-focused media. Poet Laureate Andrew Motion will award a prize in September. Publishers Hutchinson and Methuen will reissue anthologies, while a Betjeman Gala evening is scheduled for 12 September at London's Prince of Wales Theatre in London.
