PRide Awards: Home Counties honours

We continue our trek around the UK to witness agencies’ regional successes. This week, the Home Counties

John de Mierre
chairman, Home Counties
South CIPR

It's been a great year for this, the second of the 'deep South' PRide Awards.  We've attracted a much more diverse range of entries this year, and attendance at our awards dinner was excellent.

These PRide Awards recognise the outstanding examples of
professional achievement both in-house and in consultancies. To me, they clearly demonstrate the breadth and depth of creativity here in our two regions. We rightly feel that in the Home Counties we can more than match the mighty metropolis for PR talent.

To our winners, many congratulations. To those entrants who did not make it this time, there is the comfort that all of our categories were closely fought.

For everybody, an award, or near award, is only a measure of a
moment in time. What we must all aim for is higher quality still and
to make the most of the growing opportunities the PR profession
has today. My thanks to CIPR, the organisers Cloud 9, and to everyone who entered.

The Low-Carb Snack Hunter
Knowing that primal hunger pangs can lead to obesity, Brighton-based Pegasus PR paid tribute to Raquel's Welch's iconic 'One Million Years BC' picture to promote the UK launch of CarbWise, a low-carbohydrate snack. Rachel Hunter – a supporter of low-carb diets –  became the 'Low-Carb Snack Hunter'. Coverage included the front pages of the Daily Mirror, Daily Mail and Daily Star. The picture was also used in OK!, Hello, New, Glamour, and Health & Fitness. Sales of the bar rose 500 per cent in the eight weeks
after the launch.

The Woking Star Awards

Although Woking Borough Council introduced a staff recognition scheme in 2004, it was felt that more could be done to recognise employee achievements. The result was the 2005 Woking Star Awards, presented at an Oscars-style ceremony. The event was promoted through the staff newsletter, OK!, and  111 nominations were received – smashing the council's original target of 50. A follow-up questionnaire revealed that 89 per cent of respondents said it helped staff feel valued.

Smoke-Free City Charter

With Brighton & Hove aiming to be the first southern city to go smoke-free ahead of UK-wide legislation next year, the council launched its Smoke-Free City charter to encourage businesses to ban tobacco. A photo-call and 'Big Smoke Debate' took place at the Royal Pavilion in Brighton, and was covered by BBC South East and Meridian as well as local radio and press. Many firms signed up on the day, with follow-up PR on businesses – such as Indian restaurant Spice of Life, which was the first to enforce a ban .
