Motorola lures Toshiba's Bignell to handle UK roster

Motorola has poached Chris Bignell, UK PR and advertising manager at Toshiba Mobile, to handle its agency relationships across the UK and Ireland.

Bignell, who was at Toshiba for four and a half years, replaces former Motorola UK and Ireland head of corporate comms Patrick Hamilton as the US firm fights to hold its own in the competitive handset market.

Hamilton left Motorola last year to join Kodak as EMEA PR director (PRWeek, 14 October 2005).

Bignell has taken on the different title of UK and Ireland comms and PA manager, though Motorola director of comms and public policy Mark Durrant said the brief was unchanged. Bignell now oversees the firm's eight-year relationship with Firefly Communications and Motorola's Irish PR brief with Park Communications. The latter recently merged with Heneghan Public Relations to form Heneghan PR.

Durrant said there would be no review of either account for at least six months.

Bignell's role straddles Motorola's four business divisions in the UK and Ireland: mobile devices, mobile networks, connected home, and government enterprise solutions.

Last month the company reported an 87 per cent increase in fourth-quarter profits, largely attributed to record handset sales.

Carphone Warehouse has reported that it sold 350,000 units of Motorola's ultra-thin pink Razr handsets  in the UK over Christmas.
