PRide Awards: West Country winners

We continue our trek around the UK to witness agencies’ regional successes. This week, the West of England

Lis Anderson
Chair, West of England  CIPR

This year's CIPR West of England PRide Awards really were a cause for celebration. They were the most successful to date.

The PRide Awards give PR companies in our region a fantastic platform, to showcase their work. It also plays an important role in recognising the excellence of professionalism in the PR industry.

As we get stuck in to 2006, CIPR WoE already has an exciting range of initiatives to further boost the reputation of PR here. These include our 'Talking Heads' training programme, aimed at providing PROs with affordable training; our exclusive Media Dinners, bringing together journalists and PROs to debate a range of topics; and our quarterly networking events, which will help bring together like-minded PR professionals.

These and events such as the PRide Awards do not  happen by
accident, so I would personally like to thank the judges and other CIPR committee members for giving up their time.

Inside Justice Week

The new-look Local Criminal Justice Board charged regional agencies with implementing a range of judicial services at a local level. To achieve support for these services in Gloucestershire, Montpellier announced them during 'Inside Justice Week'. It devised a complete corporate identity, achieving coverage on BBC Radio Gloucestershire, which ran a live interview with Gloucestershire Police chief constable Timothy Brain. Local Criminal Justice Boards elsewhere in the UK are now using this as a  model for their PR.

Case of Sajid Badat

The 2003 arrest on terrorism charges of Sajid Badat in Barton, Gloucestershire, had the potential to inflame community tensions. During his trial and sentencing last year, the police used spokespeople from mosques and community groups for media interviews. Positive news about Barton was promoted, and press releases had translated statements from different groups. The police were praised for their campaign, and figures show that crime in Gloucestershire fell by 16 per cent in 2004/05.

Bristol retailers
Harrison Cowley had the onerous task of persuading businesses in rundown Broadmead, Bristol's city centre retail area, to pay higher rates when the council decided it should become one the UK's pilot Business Improvement Districts. A four-phase plan was launched
to listen to business owners' concerns and then communicate the fact that they would have a say in how their money was invested. It included direct contact with firms, targeting local media, production of a website (www.broadmeadbid.co.uk) and bespoke publications. The ultimate test of retailers' support came on 1 July, when the proposal received a resounding 'yes' vote.

British Journeys stamp launch
'British Journeys' is the theme for a series of stamps released by the Royal Mail Philatelic Bureau. The fourth in the collection was a set
of six stamps, each of which showed well-known landmarks in the South-West.

The media team was tasked with publicising each new set, so for the February 2005 launch the external relations team picked three of the locations featured on the stamps as a focus of the campaign.

Framed 'First Day Covers' were sent to 75 'opinion formers' including MPs and members of the South West Regional Development Agency. Competitions to win the stamps were negotiated with 55 print,
online and broadcast channels. TV journalists were also targeted with bird's-eye footage of the six sites featured on the stamps.

Although the story had to compete with the return to the UK of solo sailor Ellen MacArthur, local Post Office branches reported higher than average sales of First Day Covers in the wake of the campaign.

Central Gloucester Initiative
Dick Whittington and his Cat
It was 400 years ago last year that the characters of Dick Whittington and his cat were first portrayed setting off from Gloucester to make their famous journey to London. To mark the occasion, The Central Gloucester Initiative 'recreated' the first few miles between Pauntley (birthplace of the real Richard Whittington in the 1350s) and Gloucester. Radio Gloucester produced nine days of programming leading up to and during the event
(including having presenter Mark Cummings taking part in it), and on the day 8,000 residents packed the streets to watch proceedings. More than 50 articles appeared in titles including The Observer and Woman's Own.
